The tale of the electric Supermen begins when Superman is forced to survive for an extended period of time without solar energy. Through mysterious means, he develops energy based powers and creates a containment suit to channel and control them. Most of his classic powers remain but he also gains a greater sensitivity to various forms of energy. He can even track a van by following the trace amounts of electricity emitted from its onboard electronics.

These new powers come with their own challenges but Superman adjusts and seems to be doing well. That is, until Cyborg Superman and the Toyman create a trap for Superman that splits him into two separate beings. Both Superman Red and Superman Blue more or less have the same powers but they represent different halves of Superman's personality. Blue is more cerebral and slower to act while Red is brash and prefers to use force. The longer the two stay separated the more agency each gains and the more they dislike the other. Until the only thing that they agree on is that neither wants to merge back into one being.

This becomes a problem when they both want to resume their role as the partner of Lois Lane. The two Supermen battle over Lois' affections with no regard for her feelings until the hard nosed reporter kicks them both out with an ultimatum: bond together or you both lose me. Their love for Lois overcoming their dislike for each other, the pair fly to the Fortress of Solitude in hopes that Kryptonian tech will have a solution. On the way they encounter two super-powered admirers of theirs named Obsession and Maxima. While Obsession likes the idea of having two Supermen to share, Maxima considers it an affront to nature. The two super females battle each other until the Supermen step in and calm them down.

The Supermen eventually battle the Millennium Giants and in the course of the battle their electromagnetic field dissipates, which forces the two to merge back into a single Superman. The returned Superman is victorious in saving the planet once more and suffers no ill effects from his time split into two beings.

Superman Blue makes an appearance later due to the machinations of Brainiac 2.5 while Superman Red appears in a later confrontation with several alternate reality Supermen and Batmen.
