All that is known of Orphan-Maker's early life is that he grew up in one of Mister Sinister's orphanage. As Orphan-Maker's powers begin to develop, Sinister decides that the mutant named Peter is too powerful to control and must be killed. The cyborg Nanny saves Peter and makes him the first of her Lost Boys (and Girls). Nanny sets Peter on a distasteful mission: killing the parents of young mutants so that they become orphans that she can “adopt.”

Nanny and Orphan-Maker encounter the X-Men during their time in the Australian outback. Dazzler and Havok are ambushed, captured, and converted into children. They are then placed in battle suits and forced to attack the other X-Men. Colossus rescues a dazed Havok from his suit. Havok then unleashes a blast on Nanny's ship that seemingly kills Storm. In reality, Nanny has merely de-aged the weather goddess and kidnapped her.

Though Storm eventually escapes and returns to the X-Men, Nanny and Orphan-Maker continue their crusade to create an orphan army. They battle the version of X-Factor made up of the original X-Men before encountering Generation X and Wolverine.

After the establishment of the mutant nation of Krakoa, Orphan-Maker accepts the offer of asylum. He joins a new Hellions group under Mister Sinister alongside Havok, Kwannon, Empath, John Greycrow, Nanny and Wild Child.
